WHAT IS NBNY?
NBNY is a dynamic,
experiential, problem solving leadership training
program for urban and rural youth ages 14-20 that
focuses on concepts of tribal sovereignty, Indian
law, selfdetermination, community service, and
government. Powered by a robust team of American
Indian leaders, NBNY aims to strengthen the future
for developing American Indian nations by investing
now in the education of tribal youth, who will one
day fill the roles of legislators, executives,
judicial officers, and business and other community
leaders.
BUILDING SOCIAL
CAPITAL BUILDS SUSTAINABILITY
Our definition of
Nation Building emphasizes Community nation
building, or the process of building and rebuilding
communities in social capital ~ those essential
shared values that foster self-esteem, trust,
identity, accountability, responsibility, healthy
relationships and economic and cultural vibrancy
within a community. It is, in essence, the very
character of a nation. First developed from Nick’s
fellowship at Harvard in 2001-2002, NBNY is now in
its 7th year, and has grown from a 3 to a
6-day program.
NBNY's DEFINITION OF
LEADERSHIP
Harvard's Center for
Public Leadership Professor Ron Heifetz teaches
adaptive leadership, a leadership separate from
authority, or the capacity to introduce, frame,
articulate, confront, and where possible resolve
conflicts in value and strategies within and between
groups, communities and nations. It is this
definition that informs the challenge before 562
Indian nations with varying cultures, political
structures, histories, and social capital. We
combine the Harvard Nation Building paradigm with
this leadership concept.
· Attitude of Self determination
·
Capable institutions of self-goverance
·
Constitutions with appropriate cultural match
·
Strategic planning
· Leadership
To create an
experiential problem solving curriculum targeted to
American Indian youth that responds to the
developmental needs of American Indian nations by
measurably reducing the gap between a young person's
desire to feel a part of their tribe by making a
difference for their community and their capacity to
do so.

"Our young people
are considered our Leaders of tomorrow; through NBNY
they will be leaders of TODAY! The elders told us
that our ancestors are returning through these young
ones and to prepare ourselves. NBNY will be the tool
to help prepare those old spirits for today's
challenges."
